Welcome to the virtual gallery for the advanced Wildcat Art Students of Lee Middle and High School. The Lee Public Schools is just minutes from numerous world class tourist and cultural destinations in western Massachusetts centrally located in Berkshire County, home of one of the most scenic and vibrant areas of the state.
Lee is bordered by Tyringham and Great Barrington on the south, Lenox on the northwest, Becket on the east, Washington on the northeast, and Stockbridge on the west. Lee is 9 miles south of Pittsfield, 122 miles west of Boston, and 138 miles from New York City.
The town occupies land which was originally territory of the Mahican Indians. The first non-native settlement in the area was known as Dodgetown as early as 1760. Dodgetown was named after its founding settler, Asahel Dodge, who immigrated to the area from Cape Cod. Lee was incorporated in 1777 from parts of Great Barrington and Washington. It is named after Revolutionary War General Charles Lee.

This rigorous college level studio course can be taken one or two years and is offered to highly motivated Juniors and Seniors who have taken prerequisites such as Drawing and Painting Levels I, II, III and/or Sculpture Levels I, II, III, among other options.
This advanced class is intended to provide the highly motivated student with the opportunity for a more challenging studio experience. This is a studio art class where each student develops a portfolio/series of artwork. A large part of creating a portfolio and/or series involves the student’s investigation of an idea or theme through at least 10 related works of art.
Coursework is designed to build mastery in technique, composition/design, research, experimentation, and creative problem solving. Critical thinking, objective analysis of artwork, and the ability to communicate in the language of art is developed and used throughout the course.
Establishing and expanding on meaningful peer relationships and self-motivation is necessary. Students must be willing to devote several hours per week of outside time to art production, research, and self-improvement. Maintaining an active art journal/sketchbook is a critical course requirement. The “exam portfolio” requires at least 10 high quality artworks to be completed and presenting in our annual art show. Students are also encouraged to submit artwork to various local and national open art call and competitions.
Another component of the portfolio/series is breadth, which refers to the required 10+ artworks the students create should represent the student’s abilities to master a either a couple methods + materials and/or subject matters. Students have the opportunity to focus on a chosen subject and through research, brainstorm ideas, rough sketches, round table presentations and critiques each individual distill broad ideas down to the essence and present their personal context, meaning and explanation.
