THE HEXAGON PROJECT
LMHS student gallery - participating artists from Fall 2022 Drawing + Painting classes
THE HEXAGON PROJECT SYNOPSIS
Using our local area as a focal point, students can gain understanding of the Mohican people and neighboring tribes regarding land use, trade, shared culture, war, etc. To understand how intertribal relationships developed over thousands of
years, including after colonization.
The overall goal is for teachers and learners to find our indigenous mindsets in our quest to create a more balanced social and ecological landscape. This is a Berkshire wide arts integration project that aligns curriculum and learning with Indigenous Peoples' Day with the assembly of a mural of student artwork.

OPENING MURAL RECEPTION – everyone is invited!
Friday October 7th 2022
Great Barrington Gazebo
Starting place of the Main Street ceremonial walk on Indigenous People’s Day
1:00 – 3:00 pm
This county-wide collaboration is to honor and celebrate indigenous history, culture, and mindset.
Students in Drawing + Painting Levels 1 + 3, as well as Portfolio-Advanced Art + Art Interns create their own artwork directly on this hexagon shape. After research + conversation students use their indigenous mindset to illustrate the idea of CONNECTION. |
Parts of the lesson were inspired by the Standard Model for Indigenous Learning, developed by Sandra Barton from the Stockbridge Munsee Community. Teaching Indigenous history and culture with an Indigenous approach only makes sense.
This arts integration project is all about relationships and connections.
Thank you to Stephanie Graham of Mount Everett Regional School, Sheffield, MA for organizing this project!
